German jobless rate up to 6.6 percent in December

Written By Onepaper on Friday, December 30, 2011 | 11:47 PM

Germany's jobless rate edged higher in December, but the overall picture in Europe's biggest economy remained positive as the average number of people unemployed last year was the lowest for two decades, official figures showed Tuesday.
The unadjusted jobless rate was up to 6.6 percent last month from 6.4 percent in November, the Federal Labor Agency said. The number of people registered as unemployed rose 67,000 to 2.78 million. Compared with December 2010, that was a decrease of 231,000.
It is common for unemployment figures to rise at this time of year as winter weather weighs on industries such as construction, though the agency said the increase was smaller than usual.
Germany's job market is in very good shape overall after two years of strong economic growth. Its strength contrasts with high unemployment in economically weaker countries that have been hit hard by the eurozone debt crisis - in the worst case, Spain, the jobless rate is above 20 percent.
The labor agency said the number of people out of work averaged 2.976 million over the course of last year, 263,000 fewer than in 2010 and the lowest overall figure since 1991.
Labor agency chief Frank-Juergen Weise said that "demand for labor was very high over the whole year." Last year's average jobless rate was 7.1 percent, down from 7.7 percent in 2010.
After a strong export-driven performance over the last two years, Germany is expected to see much weaker economic growth in 2012 because of the eurozone debt crisis and economic troubles elsewhere.
Tuesday's figures showed a still-positive underlying trend on the German job market, with the seasonally adjusted jobless rate dipping to 6.8 percent in December from 6.9 percent a month earlier. In adjusted terms, 22,000 fewer people were unemployed, following a similar decline in November.
Andreas Rees, an economist at UniCredit in Munich, said that the 6.8 percent figure was the lowest since German reunification in 1990, and noted that it was the 29th monthly decline in 32 months in seasonally adjusted unemployment. He added that the German labor market still has "substantial" momentum.
He said "companies are still sitting on a huge pile of backlog orders, thereby keeping the labor market going" despite signs of new orders decreasing.
"We expect job creation in the next few months to continue, which is good news for consumer expenditures in 2012," he said.

Android Applications Downloaded 10 Billion Times

Written By Onepaper on Sunday, December 25, 2011 | 11:30 PM

Android seems increasingly prevail. Reportedly more than 10 billion apps have been downloaded from the Android Market. However, some analysis suggests Google to address the programs that are less good.
Not only is Google’s operating system that is all the more brilliant, but it was interested in the Android Market applications is increasing.
Google will hold the celebration of ’10 billion ‘it for 10 days, and will provide a series of popular programs and provide a cheaper price.
Based on the data, as long as 22 months Android managed to reach 1 billion downloads, but then it only takes a month to increase from 9 billion to 10 billion.
Instead, Apple reaches 1 billion downloads after 9 months. “Apple announced a 15 billion times the download in July, so it is clear that the momentum of Android on the activation device to download applications and explain the use,” said Geoff Blabber, analyst at CCS Insight.
“We expect Android will overtake Apple to download the application in the first half of 2012,” he continued, as reported by the BBC (12/07/2011).
Blabber added, rapid growth has raised the challenge of how to help customers find the software useful of all that is offered.
“This is something that must be considered developers and consumers, but a significant opportunity for anyone who solved the first problem,” he continued.

Rubens Barrichello Q&A: Williams in better shape than last year

Written By Onepaper on Sunday, December 18, 2011 | 12:28 AM

After a hectic pre-season test schedule, Williams’ Rubens Barrichello is feeling positive about the British team’s 2011 chances. Feeling more at home in the FW33 than he did in its predecessor, Barrichello is targeting a top-ten grid slot and a points-scoring finish at the forthcoming Australian Grand Prix…
Q: How has the pre-season build up been for you?
Rubens Barrichello:
This is my second year with the team and we are in much better shape than we were this time last year. Everything has been prepared well and the team are doing a really good job getting everything ready in time for Melbourne.
Q: How does the FW33 compare to last year’s car?
RB:
I think we are better on performance than last year. The car is a different animal though so there is a different way of treating it, but I quite like it. How much faster it is, is very difficult to know, but the car feels better than last year’s to drive.
Q: What is your opinion about the tyre degradation we are seeing?
RB:
It is difficult for everyone but it depends on the balance you have. It gets to a point where tyre performance has completely gone and you can’t bring it back. You have to look after them but even then you wouldn’t realistically be able make them survive a whole race.
Q: What would you consider to be a successful weekend for you in Australia?
RB:
There is still a question mark about where we stand I know that we have improved but there are teams either side of us. I know how optimistic I am and I know how much I would love to say that we will do really well, but what I will say is that I want to be in Q3 and to score points, and I think that is achievable.
Q: What are your thoughts on the load on drivers in the cockpit now you have had some time testing both KERS and the moveable rear wing?
RB:
Running with both KERS and the rear wing is tough. As soon as you do a lot of running you get used to the situation, but every new track will be a new challenge. Hopefully we will get a little bit more of an explanation as to how the wing will work, as originally it was only to be used at the start and in straight lines to overtake, but now it seems to be engaged at most corners. With KERS you have to look at the steering wheel to save as much as you want and to use it in the right places, so you’re not looking straight ahead all the time. This is one of the things we are taking about with Charlie Whiting and Jean Todt to try to improve.

Oil jumps to $103 as allied Coalition Bombs Libya

Written By Onepaper on Friday, December 9, 2011 | 11:36 PM

Oil prices jumped to above $103 a barrel on Monday after Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi vowed a “long war” amid a second night of allied military strikes on the OPEC nation.
A coalition of the U.S., France, U.K. and other nations bombed tanks and anti-aircraft sites Sunday and deterred Libyan fighter jets from flying. Gadhafi said he would not resign and pledged to continue to attack the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi.
Fierce fighting during the last month has already shut down most of Libya’s 1.6 million barrels per day of crude output. Investors are now concerned international intervention could extend the conflict and keep Libya’s oil production out of the market longer than perviously estimated.
“The regime in Tripoli shows no sign of giving up,” Capital Economics said in a report. “The prolonged loss of Libyan oil could push prices all the way up to the highs above $140 seen in 2008.”
Gadhafi also warned that Western powers would not get Libya’s oil, suggesting his forces may sabotage crude installations. Some traders worry a cornered Gadhafi could lash out in a last stand that disrupts regional tanker shipments.
“A ‘scorched earth’ response from Gadhafi could cause disruptions to ships traveling the Mediterranean,” energy consultant The Schork Report said.
By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for April delivery was up $2.12 to $103.19 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 35 cents to settle at $101.07 per barrel on Friday.
In London, the May contract for Brent crude was up $2.14 at $116.07 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange.
While equity markets were boosted Monday by hopes that Japan was making progress in bringing under control radiation leaks at its Fukushima nuclear power plant, analysts said concerns about lower energy demand from the world’s third-largest economy would keep a ceiling over oil prices.
“The Japanese nuclear disaster seems to be coming to a close at an excruciatingly slow pace, meaning that the Japanese economic recovery will likely be slow and torturous,” said Edward Meir at MF Global in New York, adding that the situation “will continue to exert a drag on energy prices.”
In other Nymex trading for April contracts, heating oil was up 4.45 cents at $3.0688 a gallon and gasoline added 5.41 cents to $3.0035 a gallon. Natural gas gained 4.1 cents at $4.209 per 1,000 cubic feet.

6 Steps To Make Your Cholesterol Level Lower Naturally

The increasing number of people with high cholesterol issues, along with the side effects of its medications, has begged an answer to the question "How to reduce cholesterol naturally?". Unsurprisingly, your lifestyle plays a vital role in increasing and decreasing cholesterol levels. Altering the way you live in certain ways can help you lower your cholesterol naturally, without the use of medications and prescriptions. Even if medication is necessary, a healthy lifestyle enhances the effect of your medication to reduce cholesterol faster and maintain its level.
Here are 6 steps to follow:
STEP 1 - Cut Down On Your Body Fat
Having extra fat in your body is just not recommended for cholesterol patients. Carrying even just a little excess weight can contribute detrimentally to your cholesterol health. Even a small decrease of 5 to 10 pounds of excess weight can have significant effects.
The very first aspect of losing weight is to honestly analyze your eating habits and daily routine. If you eat when you are frustrated or bored, try to divert your mind and take a walk instead. If your lunch and breakfast consist of fast food, strike it off from your lifestyle and pack something healthier from home. Watching television does not mean munching on potato chips, but instead you can try munching on carrot sticks.
Try to include more physical activity into your daily routine such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
STEP 2 - Eat Healthy Food
If you have been on an unhealthy diet for years, making a few changes in your diet can drastically reduce your cholesterol level. After all, cholesterol levels are substantially dependent on what you do and do not eat.
Healthy fats: the saturated fat found in red meat or dairy products can increase your cholesterol level by increasing the bad cholesterol in your body. It is recommended that you should not take in more than 10% of your daily calories from saturated fat. This is why you should choose low-fat dairy products and leaner cuts of meat. You can also switch to olive, canola and peanut oils for cooking.
STEP 3 - Avoid Trans Fats
Trans fat can be found in fried foods and many store-bought products such as crackers, cookies and snack cakes. Do not believe the labels on the packaging that claim the product is 'trans fat-free' as they might only be half truths. Instead, you can choose to look at the ingredients list and determine if those ingredients are high in cholesterol or not.
STEP 4 - Do Not Exceed The Daily Cholesterol Limit
A normal person can take up to 300 mg of cholesterol per day. If you have a heart disease or other cardiovascular problems you should only take less than 200 mg. Cholesterol levels are highly concentrated in foods such as egg yolk, cheese, processed meat, shrimps etc. Try to avoid such high cholesterol foods to keep within the recommended boundaries.
STEP 5 - Eat More Fruits And Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are rich in fibre which helps you to increase your metabolism rate and cuts down fat. Fibre also prevents the build up of cholesterol particles in your arteries. However, one must remember that dried fruit tends to have more calories than fresh fruit. Also, try to include more vegetables in your diet on a daily basis.
STEP 6 - Increase Your Physical Activities
Exercise always plays a vital role in general fitness and reducing your cholesterol level naturally. Exercising does not mean that you need to force yourself into high-intensity workouts. Simple moderate workouts done frequently can help you drastically. Choose exercises that keep your heart functioning faster like jogging, running, swimming and cycling.
High cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and heart attacks. Medications are certainly available to help you reduce your cholesterol levels but if you try to alter your lifestyle with these steps, you will be surprised with the results. This way you can stay away from all those terrible side effects that medicines can cause.

Celebrating French fine dining at Cassis

Written By Onepaper on Friday, November 18, 2011 | 11:50 PM

A bold contemporary setting and an ever-expanding repertoire of new tantalizing dishes inspired by popular classic French cuisine mark Cassis’ return to Jakarta’s dining scene.

A superb chic French ambiance greets diners the moment they step through Cassis’ giant, solid black steel entrance door.

Inside, an assortment of fresh white-and-green flowers and foliage stylishly arranged on a two-meter-long brown marble counter, as well as rows of neatly placed plants in sleek black metal vases along water windows cleverly reveal a refined interpretation of a typical Parisian flower shop.

A long open corridor connects the restaurant’s five separate dining areas, each of which boasts a signature style and earthy tones.

A semi-open kitchen artfully provides Cassis’ illustrious clientele with succulent, top quality dishes prepared by French executive chef Stephane Simond and his team. A secluded bar area is nestled in a relaxed, dimly lit corner of the corridor.

A New York-based award winning design studio, Yabu Pushelberg, was selected to create an innovative design concept for the new Cassis, which underwent a major seven-month overhaul before reopening its doors in mid-August.

“Yabu Pushelberg has a long, reputable history in architecture and interior design in the US and we are very pleased with their out-of-the-box approach for the new Cassis,” said Lody Anjes, chief operating officer of the Cassis Group.

“They have provided us with an exclusive modern design concept that is 100 percent tailor-made, from the ceiling and lighting to the furniture and accessories. This way, you will not find an exact copy of the new Cassis anywhere in the world.”

Cassis’ gorgeous new interior persona has brought a fresh perspective in restaurant design to Jakarta, but there is undisputed element that makes Cassis one of Jakarta’s best French fine dining establishments – its top quality signature dishes.

Its signature dishes are now served alongside its latest gastronomic invention, the la cuisine du marche (fresh delicacies from the market) menu.

For something to tantalize the taste buds, try the exquisite Foie Gras Cassis — a harmonious combination of scrumptious buttery, pan seared foie gras with soft brioche, deliciously sweet caramelized apple slices and excitingly sour fresh blackcurrant sauce.

Satisfy your culinary desire with one of the restaurants most popular main courses: grain fed beef tenderloin Perigourdine with duck foie gras served with black truffle sauce, sautéed vegetables and a choice of potatoes.

Or, for a foolproof order, choose chef Simond’s recommendations: the delightful lip-smacking roasted French pork tenderloin, duck foie gras and port wine gravy served with pickled pistachio and walnut — a newcomer dish that already has its own diehard fans, or North Atlantic sea bass lightly smoked with rosemary and tomato heart, served with eggplant caviar and black mussels.

Many regular diners request customized “a la minute” dishes prepared by chef Simond. In this case, ask for an exceptional tailored dish with French tenderloin because Cassis is apparently the only restaurant in Jakarta serving the rare, succulent red meat.

Flavorful desserts — like Le Rocher Chocolat Noisette et Amandes, chocolate hazelnut and almond rock bun served with banana ice cream and passion fruit sauce — blends charmingly accompanied by the sublime Vodkatini Cassis, an uplifting mix of Crème De Cassis, vodka and fresh blackcurrants.

Using 85 percent fresh ingredients — from meat, fish and vegetables to fruit — directly imported from Europe and Australia, the new Cassis is committed to continuously crafting new delectable, one-of-a-kind dishes unavailable elsewhere in Jakarta.

“Though we keep favorite dishes as regular menu items, we also change some of the dishes listed among the la cuisine du marche by following the fresh produce seasons in France,” explained Chef Simond.

“We always try to create our own modern interpretation of classic French cuisine that also combines the taste that our clientele usually prefer.”

Since the restaurant’s reopening in mid-August, the chef’s overflowing creative pursuit has set Cassis apart from its competitors.

“Everybody loves surprises once in awhile,” said Lody Anjes. “So it’s essential to astound our clientele with new specialties all the time. It’s what keeps them coming back — having something different to look forward to each time they dine at Cassis.”

Is there Good and Bad Cholesterol?

Written By Onepaper on Thursday, November 17, 2011 | 11:19 PM

Many classify cholesterol as good and bad. This is not true. Cholesterol is simply cholesterol. When thinking of good and bad, many are referring to HDL’s and LDL’s. HDL refers to high density lipoprotein while LDL refers to low density lipoprotein. Lipoproteins are merely cholesterol carriers. Lipoproteins are part lipid (fats) and part protein. The reason for this structure is proteins are soluble in water whereas fats are insoluble in water. The protein portion is used to transport the lipids through the blood. Since blood is comprised mostly of water, the lipid portion would not travel without the protein portion.

HDL’s consist of about half protein and half lipid; whereas LDL’s are about a quarter protein and three quarters lipid. The function of the HDL is to bring cholesterol to the liver for recycling or elimination. Low density lipoproteins transport cholesterol to the rest of the body for building tissues.
Cholesterol by chemical structure is an alcohol, because of the hydroxyl group (OH). Remember, ethanol (found in alcoholic beverages and gasoline) is also an alcohol but a much smaller alcohol. Cholesterol contains a four ring region that is characteristic of all steroid hormones (estrogen and testosterone). However, combination of the steroid ring structure and the hydroxyl group classify cholesterol as a sterol.
Cholesterol has many functions. Cholesterol is the precursor to all steroid hormones produced in the body. This includes mineralcorticoids, glucocorticoids, and the sex hormones.
Cholesterol is found in every cell. Cholesterol regulates the cell membranes fluidity. This prevents the cell from becoming too rigid or too fluid. Cholesterol helps keep the cell membranes intact. Cholesterol helps to build strong bones and muscles, and maintains libido and fertility. Cholesterol assists in regulating the blood sugar. Cholesterol helps to protect against infectious disease and repairs damaged tissue. Cholesterol is required to form vitamin D.
Cholesterol is a component of lipid rafts, this helps to secure proteins involved in cell signaling. When sleeping at night, our brain synthesizes cholesterol to benefit our mood and increase our memory. Cholesterol supports the nervous system, in which cholesterol is a vital component of the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath allows neurons to conduct impulses with each other. Cholesterol has been found to be the rate limiting factor found in the formation of synapses, this formation is necessary for learning and the formation of memories.
Cholesterol is used by the liver to synthesize bile acids. The liver makes about two grams of cholesterol daily. However, under stressful conditions the production of cholesterol increases to produce more adrenal and stress hormones. Bile acids are secreted into the small intestine to emulsify fats, aiding in digestion.
Many studies cannot correlate eating foods containing cholesterol with an increase in blood cholesterol. Eating a diet high in meat and fat does not necessarily indicate heart disease. For example, the Eskimos live on a diet rich in meat and fat. The Eskimos have low cholesterol levels. Many populations that consume a high percentage of animal fats have less heart disease. Why? Animal fats are more resistant to oxidative damage. Many do not realize that cholesterol plaques are often there to protect a damaged artery. Many need to understand that a clogged artery is better than a ruptured one. Although elevated cholesterol levels are associated with heart disease, cholesterol may not be the cause.
If cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, what are the causes? Many factors may contribute to cardiovascular disease. Heart disease can be associated with deficiencies in a few minerals (copper, zinc, magnesium). Toxicity in calcium can assist in hardening of the artery walls. Increased homocysteine (amino acid found in vitamins b6 and folic acid) levels are a factor in heart disease. Deficiencies of vitamin C and the amino acid lysine cause decreased collagen synthesis. Also, hypothyroidism is associated with heart disease. Certain types of infections and inflammations are related to heart disease (dental infections). High blood pressure can lead to heart disease. Smoking, diabetes, obesity, caffeine, and a sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of heart disease. Finally, genetic factors play a part in heart disease. Any oxidative damage from vegetable oils contributes to heart disease. Hydrogenated fats found in margarine, dressings, fried foods contribute to heart disease. Hydrogenation produces trans-fatty acids. These are non-naturally occurring fatty acids that contribute to inflammation, one of the causes of heart disease.
Cholesterol has a bad reputation and many misunderstand. The truth to the importance of cholesterol is simply not widespread enough. Cholesterol’s role in heart disease cannot be linked. When understanding what may cause heart disease, total cholesterol is not as important as the ratio of HDL’s to LDL’s. This organic compound is essential for life as we know it.

10 Best Gaming Laptops

Written By Onepaper on Friday, November 11, 2011 | 11:33 PM

Even though companies like Razer may be fighting the cold hard truth that, when it comes to gaming, the platform of choice goes to the consoles. But enthusiasts know that if you want to experience the true quality that a game has to offer, then PC gaming is the way to go. Desktops will give you that extra oomph, but sometimes portability is a necessary factor for LAN party-goers or traveling pros. For those looking to take their game mobile without sacrificing too many frame rates, PCMag has rounded up the best gaming laptops.
Most gaming laptops aren’t what we in the business call “ultraportable” (the Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 is one exception). The smallest designated gaming rig I’ve ever encountered is Alienware’s M11xr3; a 3.3-pound laptop. It packs quite a punch, managing 55.6 frames per second (fps) on our Crysis (DirectX 10) benchmark test—a respectable score considering its 11-inch size. However, if you want to bump up your frame rates high-end components need room, which is why its 17-inch brother, the Alienware M17x (Sandy Bridge), can pump out Crysis at 93.3fps on medium quality.

View Slideshow See all (10) slides

It’s important to remember that what a laptop lacks in high-end components, it makes up for in battery life. Big GPUs and CPUs require lots of power to keep running. That’s why the Alienware M11xr3 will give you 8 hours 3 minutes of relative computing life and the Alienware M17x will give you a mere 2:24. Unless you’re the type to carry around an extra battery or two, road warriors may want to factor this in when considering what gaming laptop to buy.
For those looking to game on the lighter end of the 3D graphics spectrum there are laptops with lower-end GPUs that cost a little less than the higher-end stuff out there. If you’re a World of Warcraft enthusiast, fan of games like Torchlight, or into older titles like Team Fortress 2, you might go for a laptop like the Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) or Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431.
Below are 10 of our best gaming laptops. All have gone through our Crysis test and all have come out around 30 frames per second or better. Pick one that will help you get your game on.

Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft)
$999 direct

The XPS 15z (Microsoft) is available from Microsoft’s Store and every bit as luxurious as the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch, but it won’t cost you nearly as much.
Asus G74SX-BBK7
$1,199 list

The Asus G74SX-BBK7′s huge exterior speaks volumes: Intimidating to the casual consumer, but speaks to the gamer saying, “The bigger I am, the better I game.”

12 best places you’ve never heard of

Written By Onepaper on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 | 12:32 AM

There are precious few spots that are both off the grid and out of this world. Budget Travel asked a dozen professional globe-trotters to take us to their most secret hideaways.
More photos: See the 12 places
LORD HOWE ISLAND, AUSTRALIA
Recommended by Charles Veley, founder of mosttraveledpeople.com. Trekked more than 2 million miles (so far) on his quest to see each country, territory, dependency, and island in the world.
Charles Veley likes Lord Howe Island so much that he’s been there twice. That means something for a man on a mission to collect every passport stamp in the world. The crescent-shaped island, a two-hour flight northeast of Sydney, is just seven miles from tip to tip, with a long white stretch of lagoon beach at its center and emerald green mountains at either end.
Veley recommends renting a bicycle at Wilson’s Hire Service (011-61/2-6563-2045, bikes from $5 a day), picking up lunch at Thompsons General Store (011-61/2-6563-2155, wraps from $6.75), and circling the island. Don’t miss the starfish in the tide pools near the lagoon and the hand-fed fish at the lovely and secluded Neds Beach.
Wherever you go, you’re not going to get lost; there’s just one main street and only 18 small-scale hotels such as the 19-room bungalow-style Leanda Lei Apartments (leandalei.com.au, doubles from $165). “It’s just you and fabulous white sand with the most beautiful palm trees all around.”

SAINT-SAUVANT, FRANCE
Recommended by Zane Lamprey, host of Spike TV’s “Three Sheets.” Hunts for bars, beers, drinking customs, and all things alcoholic for his televised, around-the-world pub crawl.
He’s downed Mekhong whiskey in Bangkok and vodka shots in a Moscow bathhouse. Yet for all the cocktailing bluster, it comes as a surprise that Zane Lamprey’s favorite destination is quiet Saint-Sauvant (population: 517), in the heart of cognac country: “It’s my fantasy version of France.”
Saint-Sauvant is a quintessential 14th-century village, with a fortified tower, four winding streets, and only one place to stay, the Design Hôtel des Francs Garçons. Outside, the hotel looks like any medieval building: thick walls, wood shutters, and a tiled roof. But inside, a team of seven French, American, and British architects has transformed everything.
The reception is a modernist forest with black-and-white wallpaper hand-printed with leafless trees. Out back, a swimming pool abuts the village’s 12th-century Romanesque church, a French cultural monument. There’s not much else to Saint-Sauvant, which is fine with Lamprey. “They have a pace of life I could get accustomed to,” he says. “Lunch lasts for at least two hours, and it may just be two pieces of bread and some ham and cheese. But for some reason, it takes the French a long time to eat a sandwich.” francsgarcons.com, doubles from $127.
KEAHIAKAWELO, LANAI, HAWAII
Recommended by Valerie Yong Ock Kim, film-location scout and professional photographer. Has scouted exotic spots for scenes in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Tempest,” and “Batman Forever,” among other films.
You need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get to Keahiakawelo, which could easily stand in for the surface of Mars in a Hollywood blockbuster. On the northwest side of Lanai-the least populated of the Hawaiian Islands — the sweep of red rock gardens and giant boulders pops against a backdrop of blue skies and ocean.
“I don’t know of any place else like it,” says Valerie Yong Ock Kim. “The wind actually rolls the rocks around.”
Being in Hawaii, you can certainly decamp to the beach, but it’s far more interesting to visit with Kepa Maly, the executive director of the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center (lanaichc.org, admission free). “He makes the trip worth it,” Kim says. “He knows all the stories.”
You can also get your fill of Hawaiian culture at Hotel Lanai’s Lanai City Grille, where the menu is the work of Beverly Gannon, a founder of Hawaii’s regional-cuisine movement (hotellanai.com, doubles from $99, pulled-pork wontons $11). From your table, it’s just steps to a plantation-style room at the hotel, where your dreams will likely be the stuff of fiery myths.

SUCRE, BOLIVIA
Recommended by Laura Aviva, owner of L’Aviva Home. Tracks down indigenous, handcrafted housewares for hotels and interior designers, and for her online boutique, lavivahome.com.
Sucre has year-round high temperatures in the mid-70s and a collection of whitewashed buildings that have earned it the name La Ciudad Blanca. But it’s the culture that Laura Aviva found most alluring on a recent trip.
“Even functional items like potato sacks were woven with lovely striped patterns,” Aviva says.
After checking into the Parador Santa María La Real, “a little hidden gem of a place” with vaulted brick ceilings and interior courtyards, Aviva headed to nearby Potosí and Tarabuco: “The women emerged from their houses and started asking if I wanted to see their tejidos ['weavings']. It’s a great cultural exchange — and an opportunity to pick up some amazing textiles.” parador.com.bo, from $78.
TUSHETI, GEORGIA
Recommended by Jonny Bealby, founder of Wild Frontiers adventure travel company. Explores Niger, Laos, Pakistan, and beyond for trips to the world’s most remote locations.
You won’t want to go to Tusheti if you’re afraid of heights. Hidden deep in the Caucasus Mountains, the region’s villages cling to dizzyingly steep slopes that are as picturesque as they are precarious. That’s all part of the allure to Jonny Bealby, a Brit who has trekked across the Hindu Kush and journeyed on horseback along the Silk Road.
Of Georgia’s Tusheti region, the inveterate adventurer describes a land “with centuries-old defensive towers, mountaintop castles, and stone shrines,” some of which, like Guest House Lamata, are being transformed into basic lodgings with simple wooden furniture.
Newly open to visitors after the dissolution of the USSR and Georgia’s Rose Revolution of 2003, Tusheti can now be explored on foot or from the saddle of a sure-footed horse. In fact, livestock is as common here as the fog. There are sheep grazing in almost every nook and cranny, from the rolling grasslands up near the ridged peaks down to the glacial lakes below them and all around the gorges coursing with white-water streams.
You’ll also pass through hamlets like Shenako, with a rough-hewn stone church and houses adorned with lacy wood balconies. At night, you’ll be well entertained by the locals, whom Bealby describes as “the most hospitable and fun people in the world. There will be lots of toasting and playing of accordions. And you will find yourself drinking chacha, the local firewater, out of a ram’s horn. You will just have to go with it.” tourism-association.ge, doubles $15, doubles with three meals $30, horse rentals $21 a day, guides an additional $21 a day.

EASTERN ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA
Recommended by Marta Calle, director of CB2. Commissions craftsmen and manufacturers across India, China, and Europe to create housewares for Crate & Barrel’s lower-priced line.
Marta Calle is on the move so much that it’s fitting her favorite place is a road-the Vuelta al Oriente, in Colombia. The looping, daylong drive starts in Medellín at the Vía Las Palmas and heads southeast into the surrounding Andean towns before circling back to the city.
“I’ve never seen so many shades of green in my life,” Calle says. “Everywhere you look, there are flowers-orchids literally growing on trees.”
In El Retiro, 21 miles from Medellín, a sweet little guesthouse called Hotel La Antigua sits amid historic districts flanked by plazas and caballeros on horseback (hotelantiguacasona.com, doubles from $65).
Calle’s favorite stop is Artesanías Caballo de Troya, a shop filled with watertight woven baskets, ponchos, and birdhouses (artesaniascaballodetroyamedellin.com, ponchos from $7).
The rare restaurant with a name, Queareparaenamorarte, has the feel of a colonial house and is run by Julián Estrada, a self-proclaimed food anthropologist who sources traditional Colombian dishes (arepamor.com, lunch from $12). The arepas are served with butter, filled with cheese, or paired with chicharrón-crispy fried pork rinds.
“Wherever you go, three old guys with guitars come up and they play,” Calle says. “They all sound the same, they all look the same, and they all know the same songs. No matter how old you are, everyone starts singing.”
VERDUNO, ITALY
Recommended by Rob Kaufelt, owner of Murray’s Cheese, a New York fixture for 70 years. Explores cheese-making regions — Ireland, France, England, Spain, Italy — for artisanal products.
One of the best dinners of Rob Kaufelt’s life — and as a guy who essentially eats for a living, there have been plenty of great ones — was in the Piedmontese village of Verduno. “I was staying at the Castello di Verduno, and the restaurant there was just incredible,” Kaufelt says.
He describes plates full of white-truffled pasta dishes. Dinner was served in a red-walled dining room with soaring ceilings in a crumbling 18th-century castle. In good weather, you can decamp to the palm-dotted garden to sip Barolo made from local grapes and cellared in barrels beneath the hotel.
The Castello makes an ideal base for a foodie pilgrimage through Piedmont. “The whole region is teeming with good food — I almost smashed up my car when a family of wild boars went running across the road in front of me once,” Kaufelt says. castellodiverduno.com, sage-grilled trout, $24.
DOE BAY, WASHINGTON
Recommended by Alex Calderwood, founder of Ace Hotels. Converts distressed properties (a bus station, a Salvation Army depot) into boutique hotels in New York and along the West Coast.
Before he opened his first Ace Hotel in Seattle in 1993, Alex Calderwood threw a popular series of warehouse parties. His ability to define and create “cool” has organically grown into not just the Ace franchise, but also Rudy’s, an old-school barbershop with 14 locations across the West Coast; and a marketing agency called Neverstop.
To fuel all of his endeavors, Calderwood travels constantly, collecting ideas on what he likes — and doesn’t. Over time, a theme has emerged: He’s drawn to laid-back spots that blend high- and low-culture influences. Doe Bay, on Washington State’s Orcas Island, is just his kind of place.
“It’s got a great blend of hippie kids mixed in with older hikers and naturalists,” Calderwood says.
The small inlet on the Pacific Ocean is home to an unassuming resort of the same name. “Doe Bay isn’t a design spot. You’re not going there to get pampered. There’s nothing pretentious about it — and that’s exactly what makes it great,” Calderwood says. “It just feels right.”
Doe Bay’s reception building looks like an old general store — albeit one festooned with colorful flags — and beyond that there’s a small clutch of yurts, campsites, and old-fashioned cabins sprinkled through the woods and along the shore.
For Calderwood, it’s the sauna and hot- and cold-water soaking pools that bring him back. “The pools sit on a platform that overlooks the most incredible view of the bay, with other islands off in the distance. When you’re done with the pool, you can run down a little path and jump straight into the sound.”
When not taking the waters, Calderwood takes a hike-to the top of Mount Constitution or to Mountain Lake in Moran State Park. “If you imagine a quintessential 1940s postcard of a fishing lake,” Calderwood says, “this is it.” doebay.com, campsites from $45, cabins from $80, yurts from $85.
WUPPERTAL, SOUTH AFRICA
Recommended by Sarah Scarborough, buyer for the Republic of Tea company. Works with the Rainforest Alliance and the Ethical Tea Partnership to find new products worldwide.
Sarah Scarborough has lived from Alaska to New Zealand, and she’s touched down on all continents. But the one place that thrills her every time is the South African town of Wuppertal, four hours northeast of Cape Town. She happened upon it while sourcing rooibos tea, which is made from bushes that grow in the surrounding Cederberg Mountains.
“It’s a pure, wild scene,” says Scarborough, who is often greeted by farmers lugging their produce to market on donkey carts. “The air has a very minerally quality, and you can see forever.”
Despite the arid landscape, there’s water everywhere. “My favorite swimming hole on the entire planet is outside of town. It’s a bit of a treacherous climb down the side of a cliff to reach the water, but once you descend you can sunbathe on a water-worn rock in the shallows, play under the waterfall, then rest in the shade of cedar trees with the big blue sky above you,” Scarborough says.
For the evening, she recommends staying in one of the town’s several cottages or pitching a tent at the Algeria Campground on the Rondegat River. “I’ve never been to a more perfect place to gaze at the stars.” capenature.org.za, campsites from $24, four-person cottages from $62.
NAMJE, NEPAL
Recommended by Stephanie Odegard, founder and president of Odegard Inc. Works with craftsmen to create a line of hand-knotted carpets that preserve native handicraft traditions.
There are No roads to Namje. The only way to get to the Nepalese village is along a series of footpaths with views of Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-tallest peak. Not that getting to those footpaths is easy; you’ll have to wrangle a flight from Kathmandu to the town of Biratnagar, which is itself an hour’s drive from the trailhead.
Buddha Air offers daily flights from Kathmandu to Biratnagar, the closest access point to Namje (buddhaair.com, one-way $125). It’s no surprise that the place only sees a handful of outsiders a year.
Stephanie Odegard came upon it while she was searching for local women to harvest fiber for her rug company. “After my trip to Namje,” she says, “I felt like I’d never been farther away from home.”
Namje’s isolation has been its saving grace. “The native Magar people live very close to nature, and there’s an incredible amount of spiritual activity,” Odegard says.
You can climb to the top of Thumki Hill and visit the sacred burial ground where the villagers, who still practice animism, worship their ancestors. Odegard suggests staying at the Hotel Himalaya and trekking the footpaths between villages to catch the stunning sunrises and sunsets (kblimbu@ntc.net.np, doubles $8).

BUFFALO, WYOMING
Recommended by Andy Holak, cofounder of the Adventure Running Company. Searches for backcountry tour routes that feature grazing bison, mountain lakes, and stunning peaks.
An accomplished ultramarathoner, Andy Holak thinks nothing of running 50 miles in a day. On a recent long-haul race to Dayton, Wyoming, he discovered Buffalo and immediately decided it was one of his favorite outdoorsy gems: “Buffalo has that nice mix of cowboys and kayakers.”
The town’s undiscovered status means you’ll have the trails to yourself, and its superb location at the foot of the Bighorns offers immediate access to some of the best recreation areas in the country. “It’s one of the closest jumping-off points for climbing Cloud Peak,” Holak says; at 13,167 feet, Cloud Peak is the highest point in the Bighorn range.
But even mellow day hikes are rewarded with dramatic endings here, such as the one found at Bucking Mule Falls, which plunges 600 feet down a steep rock face into Devil Canyon. Drives, too, are almost distractingly scenic. It’s hard to top a cruise in the car out to Crazy Woman Canyon, where a narrow dirt road hugs a creek and steep rock walls cast a golden glow.
Then there’s the excellent rock climbing at Ten Sleep Canyon and the plentiful cross-country skiing trails in winter. It doesn’t hurt that Main Street is movie-set picturesque, with rows of well-preserved mercantile shops and saloons from the late 1800s now transformed into art galleries and outdoor outfitters.
Holak’s evening routine: bison burgers at the Bozeman Trail Steakhouse (888/351-6732, bison burger $13), ice cream from Dirty Sally’s (dirtysallys.com, cones from $2), and a room at the awesomely Old West Historic Occidental Hotel (occidentalwyoming.com, doubles from $50).
ILES DE LA MADELEINE, SENEGAL
Recommended by Anne-Laure Behagel, kiva.org‘s regional development officer for West Africa. Arranges micro-credit loans for entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and alleviate poverty.
Anne-Laure Behagel has always loved islands. “I’m a sailor, and I’m impressed at how these marvels just pop up out of the sea,” she says.
Her current obsession? The Iles de la Madeleine, a pair of spiky, uninhabited outcroppings 2.5 miles off the coast of Dakar in Parc National des Iles de la Madeleine (admission and boat trip $9).
“You’ll wonder how on earth you’ll manage to disembark with all those cliffs, but just when you expect it the least, a narrow passage opens onto a small lagoon,” Behagel says.
Climb the black volcanic peaks to spy on nesting cormorants and rare, red-billed tropic birds in the dwarf baobab trees. Once the sunset, La Cabane du Pêcheur, back on the mainland, provides an excellent refuge (011-221/33-820-7675, doubles from $77).

Healthy living, organic Style

Written By Onepaper on Friday, September 23, 2011 | 12:00 PM

The importance of living a healthy life is a popular trend, with more nature-focused communities going for only natural and organic products.

Ahmad Nuh used to consume white cane sugar, the most common sweetener used in food and drinks. But the 30-something man decided to stop his habit when he started working at a palm sugar company around four years ago, finding that palm sugar was healthier since it contained more fibers and nutrients and had less carbohydrates than white sugar.

“White cane sugar undergoes a long process and producers sometimes add other refined sweeteners, chemical contents and even coloring, so it’s not that healthy,” Ahmad told The Jakarta Post.

“A long time ago, people ate palm sugar to boost their energy so they could walk for miles. So, let’s go back to the old days which ensured a healthier life.”

Since then, he eliminated white sugar from his daily intake, replacing it with palm sugar made from the sap of sugar palm trees or date trees. His family and relatives used followed his steps and used palm sugar to make soup or other dishes.

Ahmad was among the participants of the 2011 Organic, Green and Healthy Expo organized by the Indonesian Organic Community (KOI) and the Alliance of Indonesian Organic (AOI) at CNI Building in West Jakarta’s Puri Indah recently.

The event was aimed at introducing local certified organic and natural products as well as encouraging the public to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Organic food products are made in ways that limit the use of synthetic substances including pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Among items on offer were vegetables, grains such as white rice, red rice and black rice, miscellaneous snacks made from cassava, sweet cassava and bananas, teas ranging from regular green and black tea to Rosella and kumis kucing (Orthosiphon spicatus), forest honey and palm sugar.

But the term organic is not only a matter of being pesticide free —the food must also be preserved in a chemical-free environment.

Theophillia Arispraptami of the Indonesian Forest Honey Network is promoting tropical forest honey, which is dubbed as organic, as the honey is not manufactured by humans.

The honey, she said, is derived from Apis dorsata bees, the most productive Asian bees living in tropical and subtropical areas such as Indonesia, the Philippines, India and Nepal.

“We collect and extract the honey directly from the hives in the forests, maintaining its natural nutrient values. The bees collect nectar and pollen from blossoms in the forest, while manufactured bees gathered nectar only from one type of blossom, depending on the season,” Theophillia said.

“The hives are usually found hanging on trees, caves and stones, while regular honey comes from worker bees in designed boxes.”

She also said that forest honey was safer, as the honeybees consumed wild blossoms that were not contaminated by hazardous chemical contents.

Sentarum Lake National Park in West Kalimantan and West Java’s Ujung Kulon National Park are two areas used to cultivate forest honey.

The network, she said, guaranteed that the honey was not mixed with water or sugar, not heated and contained no chemical treatments, because the cultivation was under supervision of organizations including her institution.

The farmers are trained before they harvest the honey so they don’t ruin the hives and the environment.

“We don’t squeeze the hives to get the honey. We only drain it so the honey will be more hygienic,” she said, adding that forest honey is sold from Rp 75,000 (US$8.20) to Rp 90,000 at a number of stores that specialize in organic produce in the capital.

Theophillia pointed out that forest honey production required well-conserved green forests, protected from illegal logging, fire and land conversion.

Eni Widarijani, a member of an organic community in East Java, said the production of organic foods required special treatment.

“Organic farming procedures are performed to conserve soil and water and reduce pollution,” Eni says.

“Firstly, we have to change farmers’ mindsets to go back to nature and leave all pesticides behind to boost their harvest. We had to give them some real examples to convince them.”

She and other members also encouraged farmers to go back to nature by making use of plants in their environment such as secang (sappanwood) and pegagan or button grass (Cetella asiatica), which can be turned into hot drinks.

To clean the grass from the dirt, they usually use lemon zest or aloe instead of using chemical-based disinfectants.

For many people, consuming natural and organic food poses some challenges, since such items are not easily found and the high prices may take toll on people’s wallets.

The author of Hidup Organik, Panduan Ringkas Berperilaku Selaras Alam (Organic Living, A Simple Manual to Live in Harmony with Nature), Bibong Widyarti, said the costly price was mainly caused by the long process of organic certification programs.

All organic foods, she added, have to meet some standards, including how the foods are grown, handled and processed before the products can be sold on the market.

Yuniken, who has consumed organic products since 2007 and organized women in West Java’s Bogor to farm organic products, admitted she had to be able to manage her household budget to support the healthy habit.

“One of the obstacles, however, sometimes is that it’s not easy to get organic items, especially when we run out of the stuff and don’t have time to go to organic food stores,” Yuniken said.

“But I’m trying my best to serve healthy dishes on my table with fresh organic produce. It’s for the sake of my family’s health.”

How to choose your bra

Written By Onepaper on Saturday, September 10, 2011 | 11:22 PM

Aside from fashion to women who enjoy buying things that do not fall into the next fashion trend, "Bra" is pretty charming. Sexy hidden within it is one of the fashion girls. This was not a priority.
Is it a matter of "underwear" This is the beginning of the dress to look good, it was me. The design of the clothes they are usually designed. The design was designed to make your body as well as with concave front shirt - tucked back, neck width, depth, etc, And this is another reason to make any woman. Attention to the "Bra". But "Bra" in each is designed to fit the "style" that looks different for each person, the decision to buy a bra on, but once it's not just "traditional" or "color" is.

Cup & Size.
Buying or wearing the correct bra. We should know the size of the Cup (the breast meat) and size (large round) of the first method to calculate the size of the cup and leave it as my chest.

Measures.
Wearing bra to fit the chest. Then use the tape measure around the chest at the widest end of the nipple or in inches (inch). At last use a tape measure around the chest measurement in inches (inch).

Calculus
1. The measure around the chest, subtract the measurement around the chest. Then compared this information.
            1 inch = A cup.
            2 inches = B cup.
            3 inches = C cup.
            4 inches = D cup.
            5 inches = DD cup.
6 inches = E cup or DDD cup.
7 inches = F cup or DDDD cup.
            8 inches = FF cup.
            9 inches = G cup.

2. The measure around the chest plus a +5 to the size of Nebraska.
         Sample
    Girth of chest 30 inches around the chest 27 inches.30-27 = 3 -> C cup and 27 +5 = 32.
So, buying lingerie, with a 32 C cup.Or about 70-75 Cm (measured in cm) enough.
The difference is due to the odd swipe Brother. There are a number such as 32 C, 34 C, 36 C and so on.

The shape of the chest to buy the right bra. Check see if your breasts are shaped like.
1. The raisins, cherries. The shape of a child who has had a majority. Need to choose a bra that helps keep in the First bra.
2. The shape of a lemon, mostly teenagers. Like a little hill. Should wear a bra that is not wide support. Had to get a good look plump. "Apple shape" is already a beautiful image. Because the breast and the breast meat, its spherical form, whether it's shirt-style look. Just choose the size of a Cup & size, it is enough.
3. The Strawberry Breast, Began to descend The base is wider than a lemon. Most of the shape of a young woman must choose a project to keep her bra.
4. The pear-shaped breast to a broad base to choose to keep her bra. And select the. Function helps keep the meat on the side. "Pineapple-shaped" breast meat that was too large. Choose a shirt in a soft bra, no bubbles and to help sustain the project.
5. The young woman with a fried egg. And have little shot of the brisket. In addition,Should wear to enhance. Push the meat to the chest up. And to the sponge. Tending to increase the slope of the breast.
6. A big girl with a lot of brisket. And there were a lot of the chest. This is often a problem as it is sagging breasts. The force of gravity. Amenable to a broad outline of the base shape. And meat side out and the depth of his shirt in it. To put it in a press his shirt. May result in the loss of image. Another shape is a popular T-shirt has a chest in a Soft Bra is no extra bubble. True or make them look larger and more unwieldy and uncomfortable.

Choose "Bra" is perfect size and shape of your breasts. Taking into account these things. A little before you buy. That will help get you there. Good personality. It also allows the chest to lift the front of your mind. I started off pretty soon.

 Tips.

 - Select "Brother" always try to ensure maximum comfort and fit it into your chest. If you choose not to try to make you feel uncomfortable, do not waste a precious personality, it's easy.
- Wearing a "bra" in the correct posture. Should wear a bra fell down. We hooked up before the stretch to finish the match as usual. This will keep them to the best.

BMW and Toyota combine to develop green tech in the future

Written By Onepaper on Saturday, September 3, 2011 | 12:36 AM

German automaker BMW, and Japanese counterparts, Toyota, have agreed to collaborate on future green technologies. Both companies have signed a memorandum of understanding and entered into a mid-to-long-term contract.
Japanese automaker Toyota has met with great success, cornering the ever-competitive hybrid market. However, in Europe, Toyota has not fared as well as it would like – with more European consumers preferring fuel efficient diesel technology over hybrid-electric. In contrast, hybrid-electric autos are doing increasingly well in the American market, a trend BMW is fully aware of and seeks to capitalize on, and what better partner, it would seem, than Toyota to assist them along.
As agreed, both companies will help aid one another in furthering research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery technology. In addition, both Toyota and BMW have agreed to identify and discuss other possible fields of collaboration. Furthermore, BMW has also agreed to supply Toyota with 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter diesel engines to Toyota’s European subsidiary by 2014. These engines will be implemented into Toyota-produced vehicles destined solely for the European market.
Marking the announcement, Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said: “Toyota is the leading provider of environment-friendly series technology in the volume segment and the BMW Group is the most innovative and sustainable manufacturer of premium automobiles. He added further, ” We are now joining forces to further develop environment-friendly technologies and to expand our innovation leadership in each of our segments. Supplying Toyota with our fuel efficient and dynamic diesel engines represents another important step in the planned expansion of our sales activities for engines and powertrain systems.”
It would appear that both Toyota and BMW seek to gain a great deal for their collaborative efforts, and with all the development and research dollars being saved, consumers can only hope that they will see that savings passed onto them.
